I would like to change a fields type and it seems to be possible but when I do it, it says its configuring and then gets stuck at 0%.

Depending on what type you are changing from and to there can be an issue with this method. Anyway we do not suggest to change the field type.
The cleanest way to do this is to export the data from that field to a .csv, delete the existing field (send to trash and delete from the trash), then re-create the field in the type you want and import the data from the .csv to that field.
